Ok, Nick Saban didn't really say this directly to lacrosse players, but he does make a good point for any athlete. And that is:
What exactly is the Process
and How do I Follow it?
The Process is about doing the right thing, in each moment you are given. It says, "okay you got to do something very difficult, so let's break it down into pieces. " The process is Simply about doing what you need to do right now. doing it well. Then, moving on to the next thing.
It is the voice that demands we take responsibility and ownership of ourselves in order to pursue our dreams. It prompts us to act in accordance to what we want day in and day out.
Why Goals ARe important.
The process begins with Goal setting. We must know what we want in order to work to attain it. Think of it like this: If you don't have a destination, you will never end up going anywhere. Your goal is the vision you are chasing, and It's what gives you purpose. (Find more on Goal setting here.)
Follow your GPS.
So when you have your New destination, you are going to need a GPS to get you there. (let's face it we don't use maps anymore) Think of the process as your gPS, it will show you the way. Here are 3 ways to Follow The Process:
#1 - Do Things, You don't Like to Do.
Something that I learned in college that I wish I knew in High school is that Successful athletes (and any person for that matter) have the habit of doing things they don't like to do. They don't like doing them, necessarily. But their disliking is subordinated by the strength of their purpose.
#2 - Stay PAtient, Take IT one Day at a Time.
Great lacrosse performance takes time, patience, and willpower to SHOW UP every single day consistently. As we will discuss the brain in later blogs, it is literally programmed to bring results over a slow period of time.
If you just focus on doing the next best thing, day in day out, one choice at time. You will see the benefit pay off come game day, or college camp.
Follow the process and not the prize. Excellence is a matter of steps.
#3 - Finish. Finish Everything.
above all, FINISH. The process is about finishing. Finish your Workouts. Finish reps. Finish Plays. Finish the smallest possible task you have in front of you...and finish it well.
Because many will start fast, but few will finish strong.
Whether You Are Pursing An A+ In Class Or Trying To Win A National Championship. The Same Approach Works. You will know when you get it when the hardest things start to become more manageable.
